Philosophy

My philosophy of care…

I believe that pregnancy and birth are normal physiologic events that warrant respect and a safe space to occur. Each pregnancy and birth, whether it’s your first or tenth, is incredibly unique. Due to this uniqueness, I believe that midwifery care should be individualized to meet your needs.  This individualized approach to care helps me form connected and trusting relationships with clients, which in turn empowers clients to make their own informed decisions and remain autonomous throughout their care. Empowered adults create empowered children!

The foundation of my philosophy is the Midwifery Model of Care, which emphasizes the following actions:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the parent throughout the childbearing cycle.
  • Providing the birthing parent with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care; continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery; and postpartum care and support.
  • Identifying and referring pregnant people who require obstetrical attention.

Birth is an incredibly powerful yet vulnerable event. It is my belief that this duality should be supported by the most appropriate setting and providers. This does not always mean a homebirth with midwives. Part of my job as a midwife includes an on-going risk assessment that allows me to recognize when, due to certain risk factors, a client requires obstetrical care. If at any time during my client’s care a situation arises that is out of my scope of practice, I will advise and work with them to find the best setting for their circumstance.
